ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's T.J. Hanzsche scored six goals as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Navy, 21-12, on Saturday at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Patriot League action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-4 overall (0-2 PL), while the Midshipmen advance to 2-2 overall (1-1 PL).
Junior captain Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) posted his second consecutive hat trick for his third this season and the sixth of his career. McKenna also had an assist during the game to tie for the team-high in the game for points with sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) who had three assists and a goal for four points. Navy's Sam Jones scored five goals and tallied an assist to tie for the team-high for points in the game for the Mids. Navy had three players post hat tricks during the game.
Navy started the game off strong scoring the first three goals of the game before the Crusaders could get on the board. With 9:38 remaining in the first quarter, senior captain Matt Smith (North Bethesda, Md.) scored his first goal on the season from freshman Kevin Lux (Manlius, N.Y.). Navy's Hanzsche responded with a goal to make the score 4-1. Lux came back fighting with a goal of his own with 8:55 remaining in the first on a pass from junior Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J. ). With a man advantage with 7:58 remaining in the first, Lux came out again with his second of the day from freshman Marc Buermann (West Caldwell, N.J.). Navy scored seven more goals in the second quarter including a goal two seconds before the end of the half by Jones to go into the locker room ahead 11-3.
Right away in the third quarter the Mids tacked on two more goals to their lead before the Crusaders could end the nine-goal run. With 12:26 remaining in the third quarter, Wilkinson made the score 13-4 from Haarmann. Navy's Patrick Keena scored before Holy Cross came back with three goals in a row. First, senior John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) scored on a pass from Wilkinson. Then with 7:30 remaining in the third, junior Chris Smith (Rye, N.Y.) scored assisted by McKenna. On a man up opportunity with 5:10 remaining, McKenna scored his first of the game. Navy responded with two more goals before McKenna scored his second and third of the game, both unassisted, to bring the score to 15-9. With six seconds remaining in the third, the Mids added their 16th goal of the game, and just 34 seconds into the fourth the Mids added their 17th. Daugherty and Haarmann each scored again to bring the score to 17-11, but Navy retaliated with four more to make the score 21-11. With just 23 seconds remaining in the game, junior Jamie Ward (Glen Rock, N.J.) scored the last goal of the game for the first goal of his collegiate career.
The Mids outshot the Crusaders 52-37 during the contest. Crusader goalies combined for nine saves during the contest as sophomore Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted four and sophomore Chris Cousin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) posted five. Navy's two goalies combined for eight saves as John Connors made seven to earn the win and Paul Zimmerman tallied one. Both the Mids and the Crusaders each went 2-for-5 with extra man opportunities during the game. Navy controlled the ground scooping up 41 ground balls compared to the 21 by the Crusaders. Navy won 20 of the 37 faceoffs during the contest.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, March 4, when they travel to Richmond, Va., to take on Richmond at Robins Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
