WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's lacrosse program has announced the Crusaders' 2014 schedule. Holy Cross is scheduled to play 15 regular season games, including six contests at Holy Cross Field. The Crusaders will play two teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament (Lehigh and Loyola).
For the seventh consecutive year Holy Cross will start the season with a game against St. John's. The meeting will take place at St. John's DaSilva Memorial Field on Feb. 15.
On Feb. 22, the Crusaders will play host to new Patriot League member Loyola (Md.). The Greyhounds are coming off a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2013 and are just two years removed from their 2012 national championship winning season.
Holy Cross will then play its next four games away from Worcester. The Crusaders travel to Harvard (Feb. 25), Navy (March 1), Richmond (March 4) and Army (March 8). Last season Holy Cross defeated Navy, 7-5, at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. The Crusaders matchup with Richmond will be their first in program history as the Spiders enter their first season at the Division I level.
Holy Cross returns home to face Bucknell (March 15) and Fairfield (March 22), before leaving Worcester for games at Hartford (March 25) and 2013 NCAA Tournament participant and Patriot League champion Lehigh (March 29).
On April 5, Holy Cross returns home to take on Patriot League opponent Lafayette (April 5) and Sacred Heart (April 8), while it then hits the road to play Colgate (April 12). The Crusaders will host new Patriot League addition Boston University (April 19). This is the Terriers' first season at the Division I level.
The Patriot League Tournament will now feature a six-team field with a pair of quarterfinal games played at the site of the higher-seeded team, with the sixth-seed visiting the third-seed and the fifth-seed at the fourth-seed. Those winners will then join the top two seeds in the weekend semifinal and championship rounds, played at the site of the highest overall seed in the tournament. The brackets will re-seed after the quarterfinal round. The quarterfinals will be on April 22 before semifinals on April 25 and the championship game on April 27.
The Crusaders will conclude their regular season with a game at Dartmouth (April 29).
Last year, the Crusaders posted their most wins since the 1988 season with a 7-8 record. The Crusaders' 131 goals scored were their most since netting 138 in 1994. Holy Cross went 2-4 in the Patriot League, marking the first time in program history that the Crusaders had won two Patriot League games. Holy Cross defeated Navy on March 17 for first time in school history and also defeated Lafayette on April 6. The Crusaders return 35 letterwinners and six starters.
