Men's Lacrosse Defeats Lafayette, 11-10
EASTON, Pa. – With the game tied at 10-10 in the fourth quarter, senior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) scored the game-winner with just 52 seconds remaining as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Lafayette, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium in Patriot League action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 6-5 overall (2-3 PL), while the Leopards fall to 3-8 overall (0-4 PL). The Crusaders' 6-5 record is their best after the first 11 games of a season since 1988 when they were also 6-5. The six wins are the most for a season since the team finished with a 6-8 record in 2007. Also this is the first season in program history that the Crusaders have won two Patriot League games as the team also defeated Navy on March 17.
Kennedy led the team with four goals and two assists for six points, while senior captain John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored three goals. Lafayette was led by Kevin Wanke who posted four goals and one assist for five points.
After Sonny Round gave the Leopards an early 1-0 lead, sophomore Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) scored his team-leading 21st goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Kennedy then gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the contest. Lafayette then scored the last goal of the first quarter and the first two of the second to take a 4-2 advantage. Holy Cross responded with three straight goals to move out to a 5-4 lead. Sophomore Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) scored off a pass by Kennedy, while Hannan found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Conor Shanahan (Potomac, Md.). Kennedy then gave the Crusaders the lead with a goal with 6:54 left in the first half. After Morgan Westby tied the contest at 5-5, the Crusaders closed out the half with two consecutive goals for the 7-5 lead. Hannan scored his second goal of the game and junior John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) posted a goal off a pass from Kennedy.
Each team netted a goal in the third quarter as Brian Bock scored for Lafayette and Kennedy tallied a goal off a pass from McKenna. Kennedy now has three hat-tricks this season and 11 for his career. With the Crusaders now leading 8-7 after Westby scored his second goal of the contest for the Leopards, Holy Cross scored two straight goals to take a 10-7 lead with 8:32 left in the fourth quarter. Hannan posted his third hat-trick of the season and the ninth of his career. Freshman Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) then scored his first collegiate goal as Shanahan posted an assist. The Leopards responded by scoring three consecutive goals to tie the game at 10-10 including the game-tying goal by Bock with 1:00 left. Just eight seconds later, Kennedy scored his team-best third game-winner of the season off a pass from Shanahan. Kennedy now has five career game-winning goals.
Freshman goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made 11 saves to earn the win and improve to 3-3 this season, while Jake Hyatt posted 13 saves for the Leopards. Holy Cross outshot Lafayette, 40-34, while the Crusaders secured 33 ground balls and the Leopards posted 31.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, April 9, when they travel to Smithfield, R.I., to take on Bryant at 7:00 p.m.
