Men's Lacrosse Falls To #19 Bryant 17-3
WORCESTER, Mass. – With the Bulldogs leading 10-3 after the first half, the Crusaders were kept scoreless in the remainder of the game as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to No. 19 Bryant, 17-3, on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Holy Cross Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-8 overall, while the Bulldogs improve to 10-2 overall.
Junior Matt Ward (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Crusaders, scoring one goal and picking up three ground balls, as senior Andrew Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) and freshman Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) also scored in the game's first half. Senior captain A.J. Guarente (Gaithersburg, Md.) led the Crusaders in ground balls alongside Ward and freshman Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.), each picking up three in the game.
The Bulldogs were led by senior Travis Harrington, who scored four goals and had one assist for five points. Sophomore Alex Zomerfeld had two goals, one assist and picked up a game-high six ground balls, while fellow sophomore Dan Sipperly scored three goals, had two assists and picked up one ground ball.
Morici scored the first goal of the game with 9:30 remaining in the first quarter, off an assist by senior Matt Boylan (Kings Park, N.Y.), but was answered with a goal by Bryant's Harrington with 4:55 remaining in the quarter. Ward gave the Crusaders a 2-1 advantage 12 seconds later, but Bryant score four more times before the first quarter's end to make the score 5-2.
Bryant scored twice to open the second quarter, but was answered by Haarmann's goal with 8:01 remaining, which cut the Bulldog's lead to 7-3. The Crusaders were scoreless for the remainder of the game, as Bryant expanded the lead to its 17-3 finish by scoring the last 10 goals of the game.
Bryant led the game in face-offs, going 15-22 as well as in ground balls, picking up 39 compared to Holy Cross's 20. They also had 39 shots and held the Crusaders to 27.
Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) had six saves in the game, playing 47:42 in net. Fellow sophomore Will Cummings (Summit, N.J.) also logged 12:18 in net. Senior Jameson Love played 60:00 in net for the Bulldogs, making 10 saves in the game.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they travel to Providence, R.I., to take on Providence at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex at 7:00 p.m.
