WORCESTER, Mass. – The Crusaders were down 9-7 with 5:53 left to play, Holy Cross then scored two straight goals to tie the game but Bucknell's Peter Burke netted the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to No. 16 Bucknell, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action at Holy Cross Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-6 overall (0-4 PL), while the Bison improve to 8-3 overall (3-0 PL) and have won eight straight games.
Holy Cross was led by senior Andrew Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) who recorded his first career hat-trick with three goals, and junior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) who recorded four assists and picked up five ground balls. Sophomore Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.) led the Crusaders with six ground balls.
The Bison were led by Todd Heritage who had two goals and an assist, Billy Eisenreich who recorded a goal and three assists, and David Dickson who had two goals and two assists.
To open up the game Bucknell scored twice before Holy Cross' Morici found the back of the net for the Crusaders off a shot from the top of the circle off a pass by Kennedy. Bucknell's Billy Mattimore scored at the 3:18 mark. Kadlick then picked up a loose ball to run the length of the field for an unassisted goal with just one second left in the first quarter to end the quarter 3-2 in favor of the Bison. To start the second quarter the Bison scored three times before Holy Cross found the net. The first Crusader goal in the second quarter came at the 3:59 mark by senior Colin McGeehin (Newtown Square, Pa.) off and assist by sophomore John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.). With 1:52 left in the half Morici put his second goal of the game in the back of the net to close out the half 6-4 in favor of the Bison.
Holy Cross recorded the only goals of the third quarter. At the 6:12 mark freshman Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) ripped a pass from Kennedy into the back of the net. With 33 seconds left in the third quarter senior Matt Boylan (Kings Park, N.Y.) received a pass from Kennedy to score a man-up goal and tie up the game, 6-6. An exciting fourth quarter opened with a Bucknell goal by Heritage off a pass from Eisenreich followed by a goal from Crusader junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) off an assist from Haarmann to bring the game to a 7-7 tie. Bucknell then scored twice before Holy Cross answered with two more goals. Haarmann found the back of the net for a second time in the game off an assist from Kennedy at the 4:59 mark. Morici then recorded his third goal of the game off an assist by McGeehin. Bucknell's Burke scored with 22 seconds left to play, Holy Cross then won the face-off and took a shot with under 10 seconds left that was saved by Bison goalie Kyle Feeney as Bucknell came away with the 10-9 win.
Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) played all 60 minutes and recorded six saves. Bucknell's goalkeeper, Feeney, had 13 saves in 60 minutes played. Holy Cross outshot Bucknell 35-23 but great goaltending by Feeney kept the Crusaders from scoring as he recorded a .591 save percentage. Holy Cross picked up 33 groundballs to Bucknell's 24. Holy Cross went 13-22 on face-offs and 1-1 on extra-man opportunities while Bucknell went 3-3 on extra-man opportunities.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 7, when they play Patriot League opponent Lafayette at Holy Cross Field at 4:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
