Men's Lacrosse Defeated By #11 Lehigh, 12-3
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.), senior Andrew Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) and junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) each scored as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to No. 11 Lehigh, 12-3, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the loss, the Crusaders drop to 4-5 overall (0-3 PL), while the Mountain Hawks improve to 9-1 overall (2-0 PL).
The Crusaders were led by Kennedy, Morici and Hannan who each had a goal. Freshman Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) and sophomore John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) also picked up points with an assist each. Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) and sophomore Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.) led the team with ground balls, picking up four and three respectively.
The Mountain Hawks were led by David DiMaria who had four goals and three assists for seven points. Patrick Corbett had two goals and two assists for four points. Lehigh also saw goals from Dan Taylor, Brian Hess, Dante Fantoni, Adam Johnston, Matt Smith and Alan Henderson.
Holy Cross remained scoreless after four Lehigh goals in the first quarter. The second period opened with a Lehigh goal before Morici found the back of the net for the Crusaders on an unassisted goal at the 5:50 mark, making it a 5-1 game in favor of the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh's DiMaria answered with a goal 10 seconds later. Kennedy then scored for Holy Cross at the 3:35 mark off an assist from McKenna to make it a 6-2 game. Lehigh's Corbett scored to end the first half with Lehigh in the lead, 7-2.
To start the second half Lehigh scored twice before Hannan scored off an assist from Daugherty at the 7:25 mark. Lehigh scored again to end the third period with a 10-3 lead over the Crusaders. The fourth quarter saw two Lehigh goals in the 12-3 Crusader defeat.
O'Connor played for 54:52 and had nine saves. Sophomore Will Cummings (Summit, N.J.) also saw time in net, recording one save for 5:08 played. The Mountain Hawks saw time in goal from Matthew Poillon and Griffin Farha, Poillon recorded seven saves and picked up the win. Lehigh outshot Holy Cross 48-18 and picked up 43 ground balls to Holy Cross' 23. The Mountain Hawks went 14-19 on face-offs.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 31, when they play Patriot League opponent Bucknell at Holy Cross Field at 1:00 p.m.
