WORCESTER, Mass. – With the game tied at 6-6 with 6:18 left in the third quarter, the Raiders then scored seven of the last 10 goals as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Colgate, 13-9, on Saturday at Holy Cross Field in the Patriot League season-opener for both teams. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-3 overall (0-1 PL), while the Raiders improve to 5-1 overall (1-0 PL).
Junior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) posted four points for the Crusaders with one goal and three assists. Junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) and freshman Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) each scored two goals. Senior captain A.J. Guarente (Gaithersburg, Md.) led the Crusaders with five ground balls.
The Raiders were led by Ryan Walsh who posted four goals and one assist for five points. Peter Baum also tallied five points with three goals and two assists. Bobby Lawrence led the Raiders with five ground balls.
After Walsh scored the first two goals of the game to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead, the Crusaders answered with two straight goals to tie the contest at 2-2. McKenna netted the Crusaders' first goal of the game off a pass from Kennedy, while Kennedy tied the game with 7:06 left in the first quarter. Colgate then scored the last two goals of the first quarter to take a 4-2 advantage. After senior Andrew Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) made it a one-goal game with the first goal of the second quarter, sophomore Matt Smith (North Bethesda, Md.) tied the game at 4-4. With just nine seconds remaining, Brendon McCann scored off a pass by Walsh as the Raiders took a 5-4 lead to the half.
Peter Baum increased the Raiders' lead to 6-4, but McKenna responded with his second goal of the contest to make it a 6-5 game with 11:39 left in the third quarter. Hannan then tied the game at 6-6 with a man-up goal off a pass from Kennedy. The Raiders answered with four straight goals to move out to a 10-6 advantage with 10:11 left in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders then netted two consecutive goals to make it a 10-8 contest. Hannan ended the Raiders' scoring streak off an assist from senior Colin McGeehin (Newtown Square, Pa.), while McGeehin then netted a goal off a pass by Kennedy. After Colgate scored two straight, freshman Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) netted a goal to make it a 12-9 game with 4:01 left. But Baum scored the last goal of the game off a pass by Matt Baker with 28 seconds left for the 13-9 final.
Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) made 12 saves, while Jared Madison posted eight saves to earn the victory and improves to 5-1 on the season. The Raiders outshot the Crusaders, 43-30, while Colgate picked up 31 ground balls and Holy Cross tallied 24. The Raiders won 16 of 26 face-offs, while the Crusaders went 1-3 on extra-man opportunities and the Raiders went 1-6.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, March 13 when they play Vermont at Holy Cross Field at 7:00 p.m.
