Men's Lacrosse Defeats Mercer, 12-6
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) posted two goals and one assist for three points as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Mercer, 12-6, on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at D. B. Milne Field. The Crusaders have now won two games in a row and improve to 3-2 overall, while the Bears fall to 0-6 overall. The Crusaders' 3-2 record is their best after the first five games of the season since they were also 3-2 in 2008.
Junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.), freshman Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.), junior Myles Gillespie (Rye, N.Y.) and sophomore Jake Graham (Wilmington, Del.) each netted two goals for the Crusaders. Junior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) posted two points with one goal and one assist. Hannan led the Crusaders with six ground balls. Junior Tim Pond (Port Washington, N.Y.) won 10 of 15 face-offs, while freshman Tyler Purdue (Mendham, N.J.) won five of seven face-offs.
The Bears were led by Sam Grayson and Cole Branch who each tallied one goal and one assist for two points. Zack Ward led Mercer with five ground balls.
The Crusaders started strong by scoring the first three goals of the contest. Hannan scored the first goal of the game off a pass from Haarmann, freshman Chris Smith (Rye, N.Y.) netted his first collegiate goal when he found the back of the net off an assist by sophomore Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Hannan scored again this time off a pass by Kennedy. The Bears would then net the last goal of the first quarter and the first of the second to make it a 3-2 contest. But the Crusaders would increase their lead to 5-2 with a goal by McKenna and Graham's first collegiate goal. Sophomore John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) assisted on Graham's goal. With just 25 seconds remaining, Ward scored off a pass from Grayson to cut the Crusader lead to 5-3 at the half.
Holy Cross tallied the first four goals of the second half to move out to a 9-3 advantage with 11:31 left in the fourth quarter. McKenna gave HC a 6-3 lead with his second goal of the game, while Haarmann found the back of the net to make it a 7-3 contest. After Graham posted his second goal of the game, Haarmann gave the Crusaders a six-goal lead with his second. After the Bears tallied two consecutive goals, Holy Cross scored three straight times to take a 12-5 advantage with 1:18 left. Gillespie gave the Crusaders a 10-5 lead, followed by a goal from Kennedy and then another goal by Gillespie. Harry Baker added a goal with 10 seconds remaining off a pass from Branch for the 12-6 final.
Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) posted seven saves and allowed one goal in 58:42 to improve to 2-1 on the season. Justin Bateman tallied 14 saves for Mercer. The Crusaders outshot the Bears, 39-36, while each team picked up 37 ground balls. The Crusaders won 15 of 22 face-offs, while the Bears went 1-4 on extra-man opportunities. The Crusaders caused 11 turnovers and the Bears caused nine.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 10 when they start their Patriot League season versus Colgate at Holy Cross Field at noon.
