Men's Lacrosse Posts 13-11 Victory Versus Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) netted four goals including the game-winner as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Jacksonville, 13-11, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at D. B. Milne Field in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-2 overall, while the Dolphins fall to 2-3 overall. The Crusaders' 2-2 record is their best after the first four games of the season since they were 3-1 in 2008.  

Hannan now leads the team with 11 goals. Junior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) posted three points with one goal and two assists as he leads the team with six assists and 16 points this season. Senior Andrew Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored two goals. Senior captain A.J. Guarente (Gaithersburg, Md.) had a strong game as he led all players with 10 ground balls and won 13 of 26 face-offs, while he also scored one goal.

The Dolphins were led by Conor Igoe who tallied three goals and one assist for four points. Cameron Mann was also strong with one goal and four assists for five points. T.J. Kenary netted three goals.  

The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter when Morici and sophomore John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) each found the back of the net. Daugherty's goal was off an assist by senior Colin McGeehin (Newtown Square, Pa.). With HC now leading 2-1 in the second quarter, Guarente netted a goal and then sophomore Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.) found the back of the net off a pass from junior Matt Ward (Massapequa, N.Y.) for his first collegiate goal to increase the lead to 4-1. The Dolphins answered with two straight goals to make it a 4-3 contest. After Kennedy scored off an assist by senior Matt Boylan (Kings Park, N.Y.), sophomore Matt Smith (North Bethesda, Md.) tallied a goal off a pass from Kadlick. But Jacksonville responded by scoring two straight to cut the lead to 6-5. But with just five seconds remaining, Hannan posted his first goal of the game as the Crusaders took a 7-5 advantage to the half.   

After Ward scored the first goal of the third quarter, Mann netted a man-up goal for the Dolphins off a pass from Donovan Lang. The Crusaders then netted the last two goals of the quarter to increase their lead to 10-6. Hannan found the back of the net off an assist by freshman Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) and McGeehin netted a goal. With the Crusaders now leading 10-7 in the fourth quarter, Hannan scored two straight including his second career game-winner to increase the advantage to 12-7 with 13:07 left. Hannan now has five career hat-tricks with two this season. Kennedy posted an assist on Hannan's first goal which was on an extra-man opportunity and Haarmann tallied an assist on his second. The Dolphins then netted four straight goals to make it a 12-11 contest with 7:07 remaining. With 1:50 left, Morici ended Jacksonville's scoring streak with a goal off a pass from Kennedy. The goal would be the last of the contest for the 13-11 final. The Crusaders improve to 2-1 on the road this season.

Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate win as he made 13 saves to improve to 1-1 on the season. Peter DeLuca posted 19 saves and is 2-3 this season. The Crusaders outshot the Dolphins, 47-34, while Holy Cross picked up 32 ground balls and Jacksonville tallied 27. Each team won 13 face-offs, while the Crusaders went 1-3 on extra-man opportunities and the Dolphins went 3-7.

The Crusaders continue play in Jacksonville on Tuesday, March 6 when they meet Mercer at D. B. Milne Field at 1:00 p.m.
