Men's Lacrosse Drops Contest To Vermont, 15-5
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Catamounts outscored the Crusaders by a 7-0 margin in the first quarter and then outscored them 8-5 the rest of the way as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Vermont, 15-5, at Moulton Winder Field in non-conference action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-10 overall, while the Catamounts improve to 5-5.
Junior Colin McGeehin (Newtown Square, Pa.) tallied three points with one goal and two assists, while sophomore James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) recorded two goals. Senior Colin Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and sophomore John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) each scored one goal. Sophomore Tim Pond (Port Washington, N.Y.) led the Crusaders with a career-best six ground balls.
Vermont was led by Drew Philie who recorded four goals and one assist for five points. Geoff Worley tallied two goals and two assists for four points, while Kyle Sminkey scored three goals. Tom Frasca led all players with 10 ground balls.
Vermont controlled the first quarter as they outscored the Crusaders, 7-0, outshot them 15-3, won all eight face-offs and recorded nine ground balls as Holy Cross secured two. Kennedy scored the first two goals of the second quarter to make it a 7-2 contest. His second goal was assisted by McGeehin. After Vermont added two goals, McGeehin found the back of the net with 2:43 left. Neither team would score again in the second quarter as the Catamounts took a 9-3 lead to the half.
With Vermont now leading 10-3, Hannan scored a man-down goal off a pass by McGeehin with 12:05 remaining in the third quarter to make the score 10-4. But the Catamounts netted three straight goals with the last two of the third quarter and the first of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 13-4. Flood then scored the Crusaders' last goal of the game with 8:54 left. Vermont scored the last two goals of the contest for the 15-5 final.
Freshman Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) made seven saves and allowed 12 goals in the first 45:00. Sophomore goalie Mike Fisher (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made two saves and allowed two goals in 11:36, while senior Brandon DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) allowed one goal in 3:24. David Barton made six saves and allowed four goals in 45:00 to earn the victory. Alex Plavner made three saves and allowed one goal in 14:03, while Hayward Giraud played 57 seconds. The Catamounts outshot the Crusaders, 37-23, while Vermont recorded 24 ground balls and Holy Cross tallied 16.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 9, will they travel to Easton, Pa., for a 6:00 p.m. contest versus Patriot League opponent Lafayette.
