HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y) scored twice as Holy Cross lost to Colgate 13-3 in the men's lacrosse Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon on the Andy Kerr Field Turf. The Crusaders dip to 0-5 and 0-1 as the Raiders improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
"We struggled at first, and got behind, but improved as the game went on," stated head coach Adam Pascal. "No doubt we are a work in progress but with so much young talent and older leadership we will continue to improve as the season continues."
Colgate controlled the first half of play with eight goals including a hat trick from sophomore Peter Baum. Hannan opened the second half scoring on an unassisted goal with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Raiders answered back 11 seconds later. With 2:46 left on the clock in the third senior Colin Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.) found the back of the net on a dish from sophomore Myles Gillespie (Rye, N.Y.).
The hosts put up three goals to begin the fourth quarter before Hannan recorded his second goal of the day with 5:55 remaining. Colgate wrapped up the scoring with four ticks left for the 13-3 victory.
Sophomore Mike Fisher (Fox Chapel, Pa.) (0-2) shoulders the loss as he made four saves in just over 56 minutes in net. Senior Brandon DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) saw action in the final minutes of play for the Crusaders. Junior Jared Madison made nine stops in 52 minutes of action to pick up the win, while junior John Donnally saved one in just over eight minutes for the Raiders. Holy Cross led 30-28 on shots and 21-19 on ground balls. Colgate made 10 saves to the Crusaders four.
Holy Cross ventures to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard in non-conference action on Tuesday, March 15 at 4:00 p.m.
