Wakefield, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team has been picked to finish first in the Atlantic Hockey Association Preseason Coaches Poll. Mercyhurst joins the Crusaders on top of the poll as each received 59 points with the Lakers obtaining four first place votes while the Crusaders earned three first place votes.
The Sacred Heart University Pioneers have been chosen third with 49 points, while collecting the final first place vote. Rounding out the top five are the Canisius College Golden Griffins (40 points) and the University of Connecticut Huskies (29 points).
The Bentley College Falcons (23 points), Army Black Knights (18 points) and American International Yellow Jackets (11 points) were picked in positions six through eight by the leagues coaches.
Holy Cross, the 2004 Atlantic Hockey Tournament Champions, will host the semifinals and finals of the 2006 Atlantic Hockey Tournament to be held at the Hart Center with the semifinals on Friday, March 17 and the finals set for Saturday, March 18. The quarterfinal round will be Saturday, March 11 at the site of the highest seed.
Holy Cross returns 24 letterwinners, including five starters and seven seniors to a team that finished 16-14-6, with an Atlantic Hockey record of 12-7-5 and a fourth place finish.
The Crusaders will start the season when they host the Royal Military College in an exhibition game at 7:00 p.m., and then they travel to Amherst, Mass., to take on the UMass Minutemen on Friday, October 21, at 7:00 p.m.
