Storrs, Conn. - Holy Cross was unable to hold onto its 2-0 first period lead and fell to Brown, 5-2, in the championship game of the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic, Friday evening at the Freitas Ice Forum.
Junior Tyler McGregor (Ajax, Ont.) cut across the top of the circle before firing a wrist shot past Brown's netminder Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, Ill.) to put Holy Cross on the board at 4:09 with help from s enior captain Andrew McKay (Bellefeuille, Que.) and junior Marc Bianchi (Ithaca, N.Y.).
The Crusaders went up by two at 13:23 when junior assistant captain Pierre Napert-Frenette (Bathurst, N.B.) took a loose puck from behind Brown's net and found McKay, who struck from the right side of the crease. McGregor was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Bears answered with three goals in the second, including two power play goals and a short handed goal, to put the score at 3-2. Brian McNary (Edmonton, Alta.) took the puck out of the corner and tucked it past juni or netminder Ben Conway (South Hadley, Mass.) at 4:15 while on the man advantage.
Brown evened the score at 7:07 in the second with a special teams tally when senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, B.C.) found freshman Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, Mich. ) cutting in front of the goal, who deked Conway to bury the puck.
Sophomore Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, Ont. ) made a backhanded pass to senior captain Les Haggett (Norwood, N.Y.) for the game-winner with a one-timer at 14:57.
The Bears would add two more tallies in the third for a final score of 5-2. Sean Dersch (Edmonton, Alta.) netted a power play goal just 1:45 into the stanza. Meech followed minutes later with the final goal of the game at 3:06.
Conway made 24 saves, while senior Matt Norton (Pascoag, R.I.) made three saves in 5:28 minutes of action. D'Alba halted 16 shots on goal for the win. With the loss the Crusaders fall to 7-6-4 overall.
Over the two games McGregor tallied three goals and an assist to make the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic All-Tournament team. Joining McGregor was Brown's Paul Baier (North Kingstwon, R.I.), Gerry Burke (Milton, Mass.), Meech, Haggett and D'Alba, who was named tournament MVP.
Holy Cross takes on Atlantic Hockey foe Sacred Heart on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. in Milford, Conn.
