COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to No. 19 Ohio State, 4-0, in non conference action at the Ohio Hockey Classic this evening at Nationwide Arena. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 9-4-1 overall (7-2-1 AHA), while the Buckeyes improve to 10-6-2 overall (6-4-1 CCHA). Tonight's game marked the first meeting between the two teams. Holy Cross will face Rensselaer tomorrow in the third place game at 5:05 p.m. No. 2 Miami (Ohio) edged Rensselaer, 3-2 in overtime in the first game. The Crusaders are 1-4-0 all-time against the Engineers, including a 3-2 win earlier this season on Nov. 25, at the RPI Holiday Tournament.
Ohio State scored the only goal of the first period at the 5:56 mark when Dave Barton sent a crossing pass to Mathieu Beaudoin who then lifted it into the top right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Holy Cross senior goaltender Tony Quesada (South Freeport, Maine) made 10 saves in the period, while Dave Caruso stopped four shots for the Buckeyes. Ohio State went 0-2 on the only two power plays of the period.
The Buckeyes increased their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at the 14:09 mark of the second period, when Rod Pelley won the faceoff and sent it to Sean Collins who then fired a slap shot into the net from the top of the left faceoff circle for his fifth goal of the season. Quesada made 19 saves and Caruso made five in the period.
Ohio State extended its lead to 3-0 at 7:56 into the third period, when Sam Campbell took off on a breakaway and knocked the puck into the net. Matt Waddell scored the final goal of the game when he scored a power play goal at the 16:45 mark. Quesada made 40 saves and is now 6-3-1 on the season, while Caruso stopped 14 shots to improve to 8-5-2.
