Huntsville, Ala. - Sophomore James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) scored two goals in the Crusaders 4-2 victory over Alabama-Huntsville in the season-opener at the Von Braun Center in front of a crowd of 1,816. Sophomore Sean Nappo (Northville, Mich.) and senior Jonas Tomiuck (Wainfleet, Ont.) each added a goal and assist on the night.
Late in the third period Nappo put the game-winning goal in the back of the net at 15:12. Seniors Chris Sullivan (South Windsor, Conn.) and Tomiuck were credited with the assist. Sixsmith added an insurance power-play goal with help from juniors Pierre Napert-Frenette (Bathurst, N.B.) and Blair Bartlett (Dryden, Ont.).
Junior netminder Tony Quesada (South Freeport, Maine) secured his first win of the season and stopped 36 shots, while Chargers' Scott Munroe made 19 saves for the loss.
After a scoreless first period Sixsmith scored the Crusaders' first goal of the season at 10:56 in the second with an assist by freshman Matt Burke (Milton, Mass.). Alabama-Huntsville responded with an advantage goal with just over a minute left in the period. Craig Bushey scored the Chargers goal and was assisted by Bruce Mulherin and Jared Rose.
Tomiuck opened the third period with a goal, putting the Crusaders up by one for a score of 2-1, at 5:24. The Chargers evened the score 2-all minutes later with a power-play goal by Bruce Mulherin.
The Crusaders return to Von Braun Center on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. CST in the last game of the weekend series versus the Chargers. Holy Cross' home-opener is schedule for Friday, Oct. 29 against Air Force at 7:30 p.m.
