Crusaders Fall To Mercyhurst, 3-2

ERIE, Pa. - The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 3-2, in Atlantic Hockey action this evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 7-6-0 overall (6-4-0 AHA), while the Lakers improve to 3-7-2 overall (3-5-1 AHA).
Mercyhurst scored first at 9:52 into the opening period when Matt Fennell scored a power play goal. The Crusaders answered back at the 14:24 mark when sophomore Dewey Thomson (Northbridge, Mass.) knocked in his own rebound on the power play for his sixth goal of the season. Assists were credited to freshmen Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) and Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.). For the period the Crusaders outshot the Lakers by a 15-11 margin. Holy Cross went 1-3 on the power play and Mercyhurst went 1-2.
At 1:54 into the second period, Mercyhurst's Ryan Toomey scored to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. The Lakers increased their advantage to 3-1 at 8:25 with a power play goal by Neil Graham. Holy Cross took eight shots and went 0-1 on the man-advantage, while Mercyhurst had 15 shots and went 1-3 on the power play.
With 2:17 remaining in the third period senior James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) scored on a breakaway after stealing the puck to make it a 3-2 game. Holy Cross went with an empty net for the final minute but could not tie the game.
Holy Cross freshman goaltender Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) made 26 saves and is now 5-4-0 on the season, while Tyler Small stopped 46 shots and improves to 3-6-2. The Crusaders outshot the Lakers by a 48-29 margin. Holy Cross went 1-9 on the power play and Mercyhurst went 2-6.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
