West Spingfield, Mass. - Senior co-captain Tyler McGregor (Ajax, Ontario) scored both goals as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated American International, 2-1, in Atlantic Hockey action, on Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 6-2-1 overall (5-2-1 AHA), while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-7-1 overall (0-5-1 AHA). McGregor now has 97 career points at Holy Cross making him three shy from becoming the 36th Crusader to join the 100 point club.
The first period went scoreless as both teams went 0-2 on the power play and Holy Cross outshot AIC by an 11-9 margin.
McGregor put the Crusaders on the board 55 seconds into the second period when he scored the only goal of the period. Senior co-captain Pierre Napert-Frenette (Bathurst, New Brunswick) sent the puck from behind the net to McGregor who then lifted the puck into the net.
At the 11:25 mark of the final period, McGregor scored his second goal of the game and ninth of the season to give Holy Cross a 2-0 lead, knocking in a rebound off a shot from senior Blair Bartlett (Dryden, Ontario). AIC cut the deficit in half when Mark Pavli scored at the 14:46 mark with an assist credited to Jereme Tendler. With less than two minutes left, the Yellow Jackets went on a power play, and then went with an empty net with 37 seconds remaining, giving them a two man advantage, but were unable to tie the game.
Senior goaltender Ben Conway (South Hadley, Mass.) made 27 saves to earn the win to improve to 2-1-0 on the season, while Tom Fenton stopped 31 shots for AIC. The Crusaders outshot the Yellow Jackets, 33-28.
The Crusaders will return to action when they participate in the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament in Troy, N.Y., on Friday and Saturday, November 25-26. On Friday, Holy Cross will take on tournament host Rensselaer at 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday it will play either Nebraska-Omaha or Providence.
