MILFORD, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Sacred Heart, 4-2, in Atlantic Hockey action at the Milford Ice Pavilion. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-4-0 overall (3-2-0 AHA), while the Pioneers improve to 6-3-1 overall (5-1-1 AHA).
The Crusaders scored the lone goal of the first period with 3:30 remaining when freshman Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) scored his first collegiate goal. While on the power play, sophomore Dewey Thomson (Northbridge, Mass.) left the puck for freshman Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) who fired a shot from in front of the net that was saved by Sacred Heart's Jason Smith, but Forshner pounced on the rebound and knocked it into the right side of the net. The Crusaders outshot the Pioneers, 12-8, while Holy Cross went 1-4 on the power play and Sacred Heart went 0-3.
Sacred Heart scored three straight goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Pierre-Luc O'Brien scored a shorthanded goal at 2:50 into the period and then Dave Jarman gave the Pioneers the 2-1 lead at 3:35. Sacred Heart increased the lead to 3-1 when Eric Giosa netted a power play goal at 15:17. The Crusaders had nine shots and went 0-6 on the man-advantage, while the Pioneers had four shots and went 1-3.
The Crusaders cut the deficit in half when they went with an empty-net on a power play for the six-on-four advantage, as freshman Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) netted his first collegiate goal with 3:58 left in the third period. Sacred Heart clinched the win with an empty net goal by Bear Trapp with 34 seconds left.
Freshman goalie Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) played the first two periods with nine saves, while freshman Tyler Chestnut (Faribault, Minn.) stopped six shots in the third period. Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart by a 36-19 margin, while the Crusaders went 2-11 on the power play and the Pioneers went 1-8.
The Crusaders return to action Saturday night when they host the Pioneers at 7:00 p.m., at the Hart Center.
