WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior defenseman Jon Landry (Lexington, Mass.) scored a hat trick and senior captain James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) dished out five assists as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Canisius, 6-3, in Atlantic Hockey action at the Hart Center. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 4-3 overall (3-1 AHA), while the Golden Griffins fall to 1-8 overall (1-4 AHA). Holy Cross was down 3-2 in the third period before scoring four straight goals in the final 10 minutes to earn the victory.
Canisius scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead at the 11:34 mark when Michael Cohen scored a power play goal. Holy Cross outshot Canisius by a 9-5 margin for the period.
The Golden Griffins increased their lead to 2-0 at 1:45 into the second period with a power play goal by Jason Weeks. While on the power play, Landry netted his first goal of the game with 1:16 left in the period when he took a shot from just inside the blue line that reflected off a Canisius defender into the net. Assists were credited to junior Matt Burke (Milton, Mass.) and Sixsmith. Senior Rob Godfrey (Thunder Bay, Ontario) then tied the game at 2-2, when he scored his first goal of the season. Freshmen Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) and Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) assisted on the goal. The Crusaders had 10 shots and the Griffs had six for the period.
At 8:28 into the third period, Canisius regained the lead with a power play goal by Chris Forsman. The Crusaders then went onto score four consecutive goals. Landry tied it up at the 9:15 mark with a power play goal from Sixsmith and junior Frank O'Grady (Kimberley, British Columbia). Two minutes later, senior Sean Nappo (Northville, Mich.) scored his second game-winner of the weekend as he fired in a crossing pass from Sixsmith. Burke also earned an assist on the goal for his second of the game.
Landry increased Holy Cross' lead to 5-3 at 15:16 with his third power play goal of the game. Nappo and Sixsmith assisted. Nappo then added an empty-netter with 37 seconds left for his second goal of the game. Junior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) and Sixsmith added assists.
Sixsmith has three goals and 12 assists on the season as his 2.14 points per game and 1.71 assists per game are currently first in the nation.
Freshman goaltender Tyler Chestnut (Faribault, Minn.) made 15 saves to earn the win as he is now 2-1 on the season, while Bryce Luker stopped 29 shots for Canisius. The Crusaders had 35 shots and went 4-10 on the power play, while the Golden Griffins had 18 shots and went 3-6.
The Crusaders return to action when they Atlantic Hockey opponent Sacred Heart in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday, November 10-11. Friday's game will be at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn., while Saturday the Crusaders will host the Pioneers at the Hart Center. Both games are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
