NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Junior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) scored the game-winner in the second period and assisted on the first goal as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Merrimack, 2-1, in non-conference action at the Lawler Arena on Tuesday night. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-2-0 overall, while the Warriors fall to 0-4-0 overall. This marks the second straight win against a Hockey East opponent for the Crusaders as they defeated UMass-Amherst, 3-2, on October 21, 2005.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead with 4:05 left in the first period when senior captain James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) netted his second goal of the season when he fired in a rebound off a shot by Reinhardt. For the period Holy Cross had seven shots and went 0-2 on the power play, while Merrimack had eight shots and went 0-1.
In the second period, the Warriors tied the game at 1-1 at 2:45 into the period when Mike Alexiou scored his first goal of the year. Holy Cross then regained the lead at 2-1 at the 7:39 mark with Reinhardt's team-leading fifth goal of the season as he fired a shot into the lower left side of the net. The Crusaders killed the only power play of the period.
The third period went scoreless as freshman goaltender Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) was outstanding in net as he made 29 saves for the game to earn his first collegiate win, including two big saves from shots by Hank Carisio and Pat Kimball with three minutes remaining. Andrew Braithwaite stopped 19 shots for Merrimack. The Crusaders had 21 shots and went 0-5 on the power play, while the Warriors had 30 shots and went 0-4.
The Crusaders return to action when they hit the road to take on ECAC member Yale on Friday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m.
