WORCESTER, Mass.- Senior defenseman Marty Dams (Manotick, Ontario) scored for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Canisius, 1-1, on Friday night at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the tie, the Crusaders start the season 0-0-1 (0-0-1 Atlantic Hockey), while the Golden Griffins are now 1-1-1 (0-0-1 Atlantic Hockey). These two teams will conclude the two-game weekend series when they meet on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
Holy Cross made it a 1-0 game when Dams scored off the pass from senior Dewey Thomson (Northbridge, Mass.) at the 9:14 mark in the first period. Dams received Thomson's pass from behind the net and scored from the slot. Freshman Andrew Cox (Lombardy, Ontario) was also credited with the assist, giving him his first assist of his collegiate career.
After a scoreless second period, Canisius tied the game, 1-1, at the 9:00 mark in the third period. Cory Conacher scored when he tipped in a shot from Jason Weeks. Holy Cross was unable to answer back, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, Holy Cross outshot Canisius 7-2, but was unable to score. Holy Cross goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) came up big with a save when Weeks took a shot on goal off a breakaway, ending the game in a tie.
Roy made 29 saves and is 0-0-1, while Canisius's goaltender Andrew Loewen made 42 saves and now is 1-0-1. Holy Cross outshot Canisius 43-30 and did not have any power play opportunities, while Canisius went 0-6 on the power play.
