WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Everett Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta) scored the game-winning goal at 8:24 into overtime as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated American International, 1-0, on Saturday evening at the Hart Center in a Atlantic Hockey Tournament First Round game. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 12-18-5 overall and advance to a best two-out-of-three quarterfinals series at second seed RIT on March 13-15, while the Yellow Jackets conclude the season with a 5-28-2 overall record. RIT swept the four-game season series with Holy Cross. This will also be a rematch of last season's Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals as RIT swept the series with two 5-4 overtime wins.
The first period went scoreless as the Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders, 13-4, while there were no penalties.
The second period also went scoreless as Holy Cross outshot American International by a 6-5 margin, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the man-advantage.
The game went into overtime as neither team could find the back of the net in the third period as Holy Cross outshot the Yellow Jackets, 9-7, while neither team had a penalty.
At the 8:24 mark of overtime, Sheen fired a shot into the lower left side of the net for the game-winner and his 10th goal of the year. Junior Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) and sophomore J.P. Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) each had assists.
Both goalies were outstanding in net as junior goalie Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) made 30 saves to earn his first collegiate shutout and improve to 6-5-1 on the season, while Tom Fenton stopped 22 shots. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders, 30-23, and Holy Cross went 0-2 on the only two power plays of the game. The Crusaders had no penalties for the first time since Feb. 2, 2001, also against the Yellow Jackets.
