WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore forward Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) scored two goals including the game-winner as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 3-1, on Friday night at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 10-14-7 overall (9-12-4 AHA), while the Pioneers fall to 13-15-3 overall (13-9-3 AHA). These two teams will play each other again on Saturday at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn., at 7:05 p.m.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead at 6:03 into the first period when Bear Trapp scored a power goal. The goal was his 12th of the season. For the period, Sacred Heart outshot Holy Cross by a 16-8 margin, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the power play and the Pioneers went 1-2.
At 8:25 into the second period, the Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 when freshman defenseman Mark Znutas (Emerson, N.J.) scored his fifth goal of the year. The Crusaders outshot the Pioneers, 11-7, while Holy Cross went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
Just 34 seconds into the third period, Forshner scored the game-winner to give Holy Cross a 2-1 lead when he sent a wrist shot into the upper right corner of the net while on the power play. The goal was his fourth of the season. With 40 seconds remaining in the third period, the Pioneers went with an empty-net, but Forshner then scored an empty-netter with 23 seconds on the clock for the 3-1 final score.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made 37 saves to earn the win, while Stefan Drew stopped 24 shots for Sacred Heart. The Crusaders had 27 shots and went 1-3 on the power play, while the Pioneers had 38 shots and went 1-4.
