MILFORD, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Sacred Heart, 4-1, in Atlantic Hockey action on Saturday evening at the Milford Ice Pavilion. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 10-17-5 overall (9-12-5 AHA), while the Pioneers improve to 19-9-4 overall (16-6-4 AHA).
The Crusaders scored the first goal of the game when senior James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) netted a power goal at 6:11 into the first period when he reflected a shot from junior Matt Burke (Milton, Mass.). The goal was Sixsmith's 15th goal of the season. Junior Matt Werry (Regina, Saskatchewan) was also credited with an assist. The Pioneers then tied the game at 1-1 at the 13:17 mark when Alexandre Parent knocked in a loose puck. The Crusaders had seven shots and went 1-3 on the power play, while the Pioneers had nine shots.
Sacred Heart took a 2-1 lead at 3:10 into the second period, when Dave Grimson fired in a slap shot from in front of the net for his fourth goal of the year. Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart by a 7-5 margin in the period, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the man-advantage and the Pioneers went 0-3.
Erik Boisvert increased the Sacred Heart lead to 3-1 at the 17:19 mark with his fourth goal of the year. Kalen Wright added an empty net goal with 40 seconds left for the 4-1 final.
Holy Cross freshman goaltender Tyler Chestnut (Faribault, Minn.) made 23 saves, while Jason Smith also stopped 23 shots for the Pioneers. Holy Cross had 24 shots and went 1-5 on the power play, while Sacred Heart had 27 shots and went 0-3.
The Crusaders return to action on February 23-24 when they face Connecticut in a home-and-home series to conclude the regular season. On Friday, Holy Cross will travel to Storrs, Conn., while on Saturday it will host the Huskies for senior night. Both games are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
