Milford, Conn. - Holy Cross was unable to gain any advantage over Sacred Heart, despite tying the game at one-all, and fell to the Pioneers, 2-1, Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
With .03 seconds remaining in the first period, the Crusaders even the score, 1-1, when junior Marc Bianchi (Ithaca, N.Y.) slapped in shot from the top of the left face off circle. Sophomore Tanner Fogarty (McMurray, Pa.) and freshman Chris Trovato (North Attleboro, Mass.) were credited with the assists on the play.
Sacred Heart scored first midway through first when Rocco Molinaro took the puck out from the boards to Garrett Larson, who netted the goal from the top edge of the left face off circle at 10:33.
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead at 12:52 in the second when Bernie Chmiel took a shot from the blue line that was redirected by Barclay Folk past junior netminder Tony Quesada (South Freeport, Maine).
The Crusaders were unable to capitalize on five man-up advantages, while the Pioneers netted two power play goals.
Quesada (8-7-3) made 17 saves for the Crusaders, while Kevin LaPointe (10-10-1) halted 30 shots on goal for the win.
Holy Cross hosts Mercyhurst for two games next weekend, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 25-26. The puck drops Friday night at 7:30 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. start on Saturday for Senior Night.
