ERIE, Pa.- Senior Blair Bartlett (Dryden, Ontario) scored two goals and freshman Kai Magnussen (Okotoks, Alberta) scored the game-winner as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Mercyhurst, 5-2, in Atlantic Hockey action this evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 21-7-1 overall (17-5-1 AHA), while the Lakers fall to 18-11-0 overall (16-7-0 AHA). The first-place Crusaders (35 points) are now three points ahead of the second-place Lakers (32), and are one win away from tying the school-record for wins (22), which was done by both the 1998-99 and 2003-04 teams. Holy Cross also improves to a school-record 12-2-0 on its opponent's home ice this season as these two teams will meet again in Erie, on Saturday night, at 7:00 p.m.

Mercyhurst got on the board at 1:56 into the first period when Ben Cottreau scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway to give the Lakers an early 1-0 lead. Just 20 seconds later while still on the power play, senior Tyler McGregor (Ajax, Ontario) scored his 22nd goal of the season as he fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Assists were credited to junior Rob Godfrey (Thunder Bay, Ontario) and senior Blair Bartlett (Dryden, Ontario). With the goal McGregor extended his scoring streak to 10 games.

The Crusaders then took a 2-1 lead at the 7:59 mark of the first period, when Bartlett buried a rebound into the net off a shot by McGregor for his ninth goal of the season. For the period each team had nine shots, while the Crusaders went a perfect 1-1 on the power play and the Lakers went 0-1.

The Lakers went on the power play just three seconds into the second period and converted when senior goaltender Tony Quesada (South Freeport, Maine) made a save but could not control the rebound as Scott Champagne then sent a crossing pass through the goalie crease to Scott Reynolds, who placed the puck into the left side of the net.

Holy Cross responded immediately to regain the lead, when 19 seconds later freshman Kai Magnussen (Okotoks, Alberta) scored his third goal of the season when he knocked in a loose puck in front of a crowded goal past Mercyhurst goalie Tyler Small.

Bartlett increased Holy Cross' lead to 4-2 with less than two minutes remaining in the period, when he netted his second goal of the game and 10th of the season. Bartlett brought the puck from behind the net and then sent a backhander past Small. Quesada made 19 saves for the period. The Crusaders had 11 shots and went 0-2 on the man-advantage, while the Lakers had 20 shots and went 1-3.

Junior Sean Nappo (Northville, Mich.) put the game out of reach when he scored his eighth goal of the season at 14:39 mark of the third period, giving Holy Cross the 5-2 win.

Quesada made 36 saves and improved to 16-3-1 on the season as the Holy Cross defense held the nation's top ranked offense to two goals. Small stopped 20 shots and falls to 10-4-0. The Crusaders had 25 shots and went 1-4 on the power play, while the Lakers had 38 shots and went 1-6.

With his goal and two assists, McGregor has now tallied seven goals and 16 assists for 23 points on his 10 game scoring streak.
