HC Drops 5-4 Decision To Sacred Heart

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sacred Heart's Peter Ferraro scored the game-winning goal at the 11:40 mark of the third period to break a 4-4 tie as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Sacred Heart, 5-4, in Atlantic Hockey action on Fright night at the Hart Center. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 10-16-5 overall (9-11-5 AHA), while the Pioneers improve to 18-9-4 overall (15-6-4 AHA). These two teams will play again on Saturday evening at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn. at 7:00 p.m. Senior James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) had a goal and an assist, while junior Brent Franklin (Grosse Point Farms, Mich.) recorded his first collegiate points with two assists to lead the Crusaders.
The Crusaders scored the first goal of the game with 2:23 left in the first period when Sixsmith blasted a slap shot over Sacred Heart goalie Stefan Drew's left shoulder for a power play goal. Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart, 15-9 for the period, while the Crusaders went 1-4 on the power play and the Pioneers went 0-2.
Freshman Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) gave Holy Cross a 2-0 lead at 3:17 into the second period when he knocked in a loose puck in front of the net for his third goal of the year. Sacred Heart's Paul Ferraro cut the deficit in half with a power play goal at 5:27. Senior Rob Godfrey (Thunder Bay, Ontario) increased the Holy Cross lead to 3-1 with his fourth goal of the season.
The Pioneers would then go onto score three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead. Scott Marchesi cut the lead to 3-2 at the 9:39 mark of the second period with a goal, while Dave Jarman tied the game at 3-3 at 13:45 when he received a pass from behind the net from Alexandre Parent and then buried the puck into the net from in front of the goal. Bear Trapp gave Sacred Heart the lead with 2:25 left in the second period with a power play goal.
Senior Sean Nappo (Northville, Mich.) tied the game at 4-4 with a power play goal at 6:01 into the third period for his seventh tally of the year. Peter Ferraro then scored the game winner at 11:40. The Crusaders went with an empty net for the final 1:58 but could not get the equalizer.
Holy Cross freshman goaltender Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) played the first two periods allowing four goals and making 24 saves, while freshman goalie Tyler Chestnut (Faribault, Minn.) played the third period allowing one goal with five saves. Sacred Heart's Stefan Drew stopped 33 shots. The Crusaders outshot the Pioneers by a 37-34 margin, while Holy Cross went 2-7 on the power play and Sacred Heart went 2-6.
