WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) scored two goals as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Army, 3-3, in Atlantic Hockey action on Saturday night at Tate Rink. With the tie, the Crusaders are now 9-14-5 overall (8-9-5 AHA), while the Black Knights are 12-10-5 overall (12-7-5 AHA).
The first period went scoreless as Holy Cross outshot Army by a 10-7 margin.
The Crusaders scored the first goal of the game at the 11:23 mark of the second period while on the power play when senior Rob Godfrey (Thunder Bay, Ontario) fired a slap shot from the blue line past Army goaltender Josh Kassel for his third goal of the season. With 3:46 left in the period, Army tied the game with a goal by Ken Rowe. Just 29 seconds later the Black Knights took a 2-1 lead with a goal by Tim Manthey. For the period, Army outshot Holy Cross, 16-4.
Holy Cross tied the game at 2-2 at 7:03 into the third period when sophomore Dewey Thomson (Northbridge, Mass.) skated with the puck into the Army zone and sent a crossing pass from the left side to Reinhardt who then buried a backhander into the net. At the 11:08 mark, Reinhardt scored his second goal of the game when he blasted a slap shot by Kassel from a pass by Thomson to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead. The Black Knights went with an empty net with 1:36 remaining and tied the game at 3-3 with 37 seconds left when Owen Meyer knocked a loose puck into left side of the net. The game remained tied through overtime for the 3-3 final score.
Sophomore goaltender Charlie Lockwood (Breckenridge, Colo.) made 33 saves, while Kassel stopped 20 shots. Holy Cross had 23 shots and went 1-3 on the power play, while Army had 36 shots and went 0-5.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday and Saturday, February 9-10, when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y., to face Atlantic Hockey opponent Canisius. Friday night's game is set to start at 7:00 p.m., while Saturday's game will begin at 5:00 p.m.
