WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 2-1, on Saturday night at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 8-12-6 overall (7-10-3 AHA), while the Lakers improve to 9-14-5 overall (9-6-5 AHA). Mercyhurst won the weekend series, 2-0, and the season series 2-1-1.
The first period went scoreless as Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross by an 11-8 margin, while the Lakers went 0-1 on the power play.
Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead at 1:30 into the second period when sophomore forward Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) scored his ninth goal of the season. Sophomore forward Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) passed the puck to Sheahan who then sent a slap shot into the net. At the 14:27 mark, the Lakers tied the game at 1-1 when Mike Gurtler netted a power play goal for his seventh goal of the year. Mercyhurst took a 2-1 lead with 1:42 remaining in the period when Neil Graham scored a shorthanded goal for the game-winner and his fourth goal of the season. The Lakers outshot the Crusaders, 17-9, while Holy Cross went 0-2 on the man-advantage and Mercyhurst went 1-1.
With 1:11 remaining in the third period, Holy Cross went with an empty net but was unable to tie the games as the game ended in the 2-1 final score.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made 33 saves, while Matt Lundin stopped 29 shots to earn the win for Mercyhurst. The Lakers outshot the Crusaders by a 35-30 margin, while Holy Cross went 0-4 on the power play and Mercyhurst went 1-3.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday and Saturday, February 8-9, when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to meet Atlantic Hockey opponent Army. Both games are set to start at 7:05 p.m.
