WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Crusaders scored four unanswered goals in the third period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated American International, 7-5, in Atlantic Hockey action this evening at the Olympia Ice Center. With the win, the Crusaders have won four in a row and improve to 16-6-1 overall (12-4-1 AHA), while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-15-2 overall (4-12-2 AHA). These two teams will conclude the home-and-home series on Saturday night at the Hart Center. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m. Holy Cross leads the season series, 2-0-1.
Just 45 seconds into the first period the Yellow Jackets took an early 1-0 lead, when Neil Sullivan scored his sixth goal of the season. At the 6:22 mark, AIC increased its lead to 2-0 when Andy Walbert skated down the left side with the puck, and then sent a crossing pass to Jereme Tendler who buried it into the right side of the net past senior goaltender Ben Conway (South Hadley, Mass.).
The Crusaders answered back to cut the deficit in half at the 10:39 mark of the first period, when senior Blair Bartlett (Dryden, Ontario) sent a pass from behind the goal to junior defenseman Rob Godfrey (Thunder Bay, Ontario), who fired it into the net for his third goal of the season. Two minutes later, Holy Cross tied the game at 2-2 when sophomore Cal St. Denis (Freelton, Ontario) netted his fourth the goal of the year. Godfrey passed the puck from the far left side of the left face off circle to St. Denis at the right corner of the goalie box, who then placed it into the lower right side of the net. For the period, Holy Cross outshot AIC, 17-5. The Crusaders went 0-2 on the only two power plays of the period.
At 1:41 into the second period, Bartlett gave the Crusaders a 3-2 lead when he scored his sixth goal of the season with assists credited to senior Tyler McGregor (Ajax, Ontario) and sophomore Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.). The Yellow Jackets evened the game at 3-3 with a goal by David Turco with an assist from Matt Woodard at 6:09.
AIC regained the lead at 4-3 at the 12:01 mark. Bryan Jurynec sent a slap shot into the net off a rebound from a Chad Richardson shot. Two minutes later the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 5-3 with an unassisted goal by Tendler for his second of the night. The Crusaders had 14 shots, while the Yellow Jackets had 11 shots and went 0-2 on the power play.
Holy Cross senior goaltender Tony Quesada (South Freeport, Maine) entered the game for Conway to start off the third period. Three minutes into the period, St. Denis scored his second goal of the game and fifth of the season off a slap shot, that was blocked by AIC goalie Tom Fenton, but bounced into the air falling behind Fenton and into the net.
Bartlett tied the game at 5-5 on the power play three minutes later when he pounced on a rebound in front of the goal and sent a one-timer into the net for his second goal of the game and seventh of the season. At the 11:10 mark, the Crusaders took the lead for good when McGregor scored into the right side of the net from a centering pass by senior Pierre Napert-Frenette (Bathurst, New Brunswick). Napert-Frenette added an empty net goal with six seconds remaining to clinch the win at 7-5.
Quesada held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the third period as he stopped seven shots to earn the victory and improve to 11-3-1 on the season. Conway made 11 saves through the first two periods, while Fenton stopped 39 shots for the game. Holy Cross had 46 shots and went 1-3 on the power play, while AIC had 23 shots and went 0-2.
