WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior forward Cal St. Denis (Freelton, Ontario) scored the game-winner to break a 3-3 tie in the third period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated American International, 5-3, on Tuesday night at the Olympia Ice Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 7-8-6 overall (6-7-3 AHA) and earn their second straight win, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-15-3 overall (5-11-2 AHA). The Crusaders split the two-game season series with the Yellow Jackets.
AIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:27 into the first period when Chris Campanale knocked in a rebound off a shot by David Turco for his fourth goal of the year. At the 10:49 mark, freshman forward Joe Brock (Cumming, Ga.) netted his seventh goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game. Senior forward Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) sent a pass to Brock who was waiting in front of the net as he then fired the puck into the goal. At 14:27, freshman defenseman Mark Znutas (Emerson, N.J.) blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net for his fourth goal of the year to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. For the period, AIC outshot Holy Cross by a 13-9 margin.
At 4:28 into the second period, the Yellow Jackets tied the game at 2-2 when Keith Rodger scored a power play goal off of a slap shot for his first goal of the season. The Crusaders regained the lead at 6:01 when freshman forward Everettt Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta) netted his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Sheen's 12 goals are tied for second in Atlantic Hockey. Reinhardt earned his second assist of the game on the goal. The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 3-3 when they went on a two-on-one and Bryan Jurynec sent a backhander into the goal for his second goal of the year. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders, 11-10, while Holy Cross went 0-1 on the man-advantage and AIC went 1-2.
Holy Cross took a 4-3 lead at 1:59 into the third period when senior forward Cal St. Denis (Freelton, Ontario) tipped in a shot by freshman defenseman Matt Celin (Gibsonia, Pa.) for the game-winner and his second goal of the year. The assist was Celin's first collegiate point. Junior forward Dewey Thomson (Northbridge, Mass.) increased the Holy Cross lead to 5-3 while on the power play for his third goal of the year. The Yellow Jackets went with an empty-net with 1:10 remaining in the period but were unable to score as the game ended with a 5-3 score.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made 31 saves to improve to 5-5-3 on the year, while Dan Ramirez stopped 23 shots for AIC. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders by a 34-28 margin, while each team went 1-2 on the power play.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, January 19, when they host ECACHL opponent Quinnipiac at the Hart Center at 4:00 p.m.
