WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Matt Werry (Regina, Saskatchewan) and senior James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) each scored goals as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Air Force, 2-2, for the second straight night in Atlantic Hockey action at the Hart Center on Saturday evening. With the tie, the Crusaders are now 8-11-4 overall (7-8-4 AHA), while the Falcons are 11-8-5 overall (8-3-5 AHA).
The first period went scoreless as each team took nine shots, while both teams went 0-1 on the power play.
The Crusaders scored the first goal of the game at 1:58 into the second period when Werry netted his second goal of the year. Junior Chris Trovato (North Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Tanner Fogarty (McMurray, Pa.) were credited with assists. At the 7:40 mark, Air Force tied the game at 1-1 when Josh Schaffer scored on the power play.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead when Mike Phillipich scored his 10th goal of the season at 10:47 of the second period as Air Force was on a two man-advantage power play. A little over a minute later the Crusaders tied the game at 2-2 when Sixsmith scored his second shorthanded goal in two games.
After a scoreless third period each team had power play opportunities in overtime but could not capitalize. With 1:12 left in the overtime Fogarty was hooked while on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot but Air Force goalie Ben Worker made the save.
Holy Cross freshman goaltender Tyler Chestnut (Faribault, Minn.) made 32 saves and is 2-2-2 on the season, while Worker stopped 28 shots and is 1-0-1. Air Force outshot Holy Cross, 34-30.
Sixsmith now has 141 career points (43 goals and 98 assists) as he is second on the Holy Cross all-time Division I points list. The record is 143 set by current San Jose Shark Patrick Rissmiller (1998-2002).
The Crusaders will return to action on Tuesday, January 16, when they travel to Hanover, N.H., to face ECACHL member Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
