WORCESTER, Mass. - The Crusaders came from two goals behind with third period goals by senior James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) and junior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Air Force, 2-2, in Atlantic Hockey action at the Hart Center on Friday night. With the tie, the Crusaders are now 8-11-3 overall (7-8-3 AHA), while the Falcons are 11-8-4 overall (8-3-4 AHA). These two teams will play again at the Hart Center on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
The first period went scoreless as Holy Cross killed off the only power play of the period. Holy Cross sophomore goaltender Charlie Lockwood (Breckenridge, Colo.) made 15 saves in the period, while Peter Foster stopped six shots for the Falcons.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead at the 8:12 mark of the second period when Michael Mayra scored his first goal of the season. Air Force extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal by Mike Phillipich with 1:27 left to go in the period. Air Force killed the only power play of the period and outshot Holy Cross, 11-6.
The Crusaders cut the deficit in half when Sixsmith scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway at 4:17 into the third period. Assists were credited to junior Matt Burke (Milton, Mass.) and Reinhardt. It was Sixsmith's 11th goal of the season. Reinhardt then tied the game at 2-2 at the 7:13 mark while on the power play for his team-leading 12th goal of the year. Sixsmith and senior Jon Landry (Lexington, Mass.) had the assists. The game would remain scoreless through the end of the third period and through overtime.
Lockwood made 33 saves for Holy Cross, while Foster stopped 17 shots. The Crusaders had 19 shots and went 1-2 on the power play, while the Falcons had 35 shots and went 0-3.
Sixsmith now has 140 career points (42 goals and 98 assists) which moves him to second on the Holy Cross all-time Division I points list. The record is 143 set by current San Jose Shark Patrick Rissmiller (1998-2002).
