WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Freshmen Luke Miller (Andover, Mass.) and Andrew Cox (Lombardy, Ontario) each scored their first collegiate goal, as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated American International, 5-1, on Saturday evening at the Olympia Ice Center in Atlantic Hockey action. Sophomore Mark Znutas (Emerson, N.J.) and junior Peter Lorinser (Marquette, Mich.) both scored their second goal of the year, while sophomore J.P. Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) netted his fourth goal of the season. The Crusaders improve to 8-11-2 overall (7-8-1 Atlantic Hockey) with the win, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-16-1 overall (4-11-0 Atlantic Hockey).
Holy Cross has now won three in a row and is 3-0-1 in its last four games. The Crusaders swept this weekend's home-and-home series, as they also won Friday's game by a score of 5-1. Holy Cross takes this year's season series with American International, 3-1-0.
At 5:39 into the first period, Znutas gave Holy Cross a 1-0 lead when he blasted a slap shot into the net from the left blue line. Freshman Gianni Baldassari (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had an assist. At the 7:04 mark, Miller scored to increase the Crusaders' lead to 2-0. Junior Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) sent a crossing pass from the right side to a waiting Miller, who knocked the puck into left side of the goal. Cox was also credited with an assist. Cox made it a 3-0 contest when he scored at the 15:40 mark as he fired a wrist shot from right in front of the net into the lower right corner. Forshner assisted on the goal. AIC outshot Holy Cross by a 9-6 margin in the opening period, while neither team had a penalty.
The Yellow Jackets made it a 3-1 game at the 9:46 mark of the second period when Chad Richardson scored on a slap shot while on the power play. The Crusaders had seven shots and went 0-1 on the man-advantage in the period, while AIC had 10 shots and went 1-2.
With 1:45 left in the third period, Martignetti netted an empty-net goal. Freshman Jay Silvia (Burlington, Mass.) and junior goalie Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) recorded assists. Lorinser then concluded the scoring with just three seconds remaining, with assists by Baldassari and sophomore Jamie Jelinek (Great Falls, Va.) for the 5-1 final score.
Dams made 26 saves to improve to 3-1-0 on the year, while Dam Ramirez stopped 18 shots for the Yellow Jackets and is now 4-10-1. AIC outshot Holy Cross by a 27-23 margin, while the Crusaders went 1-4 on the power play and the Yellow Jackets went 1-6.
The Crusaders will return to action when they play at Atlantic Hockey opponent Army on Jan. 17-18. Saturday's game will be at 7:00 p.m., while Sunday's game will be shown live on ESPNU at 4:00 p.m.
