West Springfield, Mass. - After an early goal by American International the Holy Cross men's hockey team answered with two first period goals to put the score at 2-1, but the Crusaders didn't stop there and closed the game with a third period goal to skate away victorious over the Yellow Jackets, 3-1, Friday night at the Olympia Ice Center.
Leading the Crusaders was freshman Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.), who put Holy Cross on the board at 8:16 in the first to tie the game at one-all, added a helper to his marker for a two point night. Freshman Matt Burke (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) were credited with the assist on Reinhardt's goal.
The Crusaders went ahead 2-1 with a power play goal by senior captain Andrew McKay (Bellefeuille, Que.) at 14:42 in the first, with help from junior Tyler McGregor (Ajax, Ont.) and sophomore Jon Landry (Lexington, Mass.).
Freshman Brian Gabriel (Kenai, Alaska) sealed the Crusaders victory with his first collegiate-goal, a short-hander, at 13:38 in the third. Sixsmith and Reinhardt assisted on the play.
The Yellowjackets jumped on the board with a goal just 1:14 into the first stanza. Ron Miller netted a power play goal for AIC with help from Andy Walbert and C.J. McConnell.
Junior Ben Conway (South Hadley, Mass.) made 39 saves in net for the win, while Frank Novello halted 31 shots on goal.
Holy Cross next plays at Mercyhurst, Friday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and wraps up the weekend with an afternoon game at Canisius on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m.
