Jan. 7, 2006
WORCESTER, Mass. - Three different Crusaders scored goals and senior goaltender Ben Conway (South Hadley, Mass.) made 34 saves as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 3-2, in Atlantic Hockey action this evening at the Hart Center. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 11-5-1 overall (8-3-1 AHA), while the Pioneers fall to 11-8-1 overall (8-6-1 AHA). The two teams split the home-and-home series, with the Pioneers winning 3-1 last night, as both teams are now tied for second place in Atlantic Hockey with 17 points each.
Holy Cross got on the board first at just 29 seconds into the first period, when senior Pierre Napert-Frenette (Bathurst, New Brunswick) sent a pass to Tyler McGregor (Ajax, Ontario) right in front of net, who then chipped the puck past Sacred Heart goaltender Jason Smith for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Crusaders extended their lead to 2-0 at the 8:27 mark of the second period when sophomore Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from junior James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.). The Pioneers went on a power play late in the period and capitalized by cutting the deficit in half with under a minute remaining, when Alexandre Parent netted his eighth goal of the season.
Holy Cross regained its two goal lead at the 15:28 mark of the third period, when junior Tanner Fogarty (McMurray, Pa.) followed his own rebound and fired a shot into the net for his second goal of the year. Only 14 seconds later the Pioneers made it a 3-2 game, when Peter Ferraro scored his fifth goal of the season. Sacred Heart went with an empty net for the final 35 seconds of the game, but the Holy Cross defense prevented any good opportunities.
Conway is now 5-2-0 on the season, while Smith stopped 33 shots to fall to 10-7-1. Both teams had 36 shots, while Holy Cross went 1-8 on the power play and Sacred Heart went 1-5.
The Crusaders return to the ice when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to face Army in Atlantic Hockey action on Friday and Saturday, January 13-14. Both games are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
