MILFORD, Conn.- The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Sacred Heart, 3-1, in Atlantic Hockey action this evening at the Milford Ice Pavilion. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 10-5-1 overall (7-3-1 AHA), while the Pioneers improve to 11-7-1 overall (8-5-1 AHA). The home-and-home series between the two teams will conclude Saturday night at the Hart Center. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
Holy Cross got on the board first when at 4:22 into the first period senior Blair Bartlett (Dryden, Ontario) stole the puck in the Pioneers' zone and then drove to the net on a breakaway firing it past Sacred Heart goaltender Jason Smith for his second goal of the season. For the period, the Crusaders outshot the Pioneers, 12-10, while both teams went 0-2 on the power play.
The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1, at 3:19 into the second period when Peter Giatrelis scored his first goal of the season. Holy Cross took nine shots compared to Sacred Heart's seven, while each team went 0-3 with a man-advantage.
At just under seven minutes into the third period Sacred Heart forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien took off on a breakaway, but Holy Cross senior goaltender Ben Conway (South Hadley, Mass.) made a big save to keep the game tied at 1-1. The Pioneers took the lead for good at the 13:56 mark when Bernie Chmiel took a shot from the blue line, which was then tipped into the net by Andrew Billinghurst. Sacred Heart clinched the victory when Alexandre Parent added an empty net goal with 14.9 seconds left in the game.
Conway made 25 saves and is now 4-2-0 on the season, while Jason Smith stopped 30 shots to improve to 10-6-1 on the season. Holy Cross had 31 shots and went 0-8 on the power play, while Sacred Heart had 28 shots and went 0-6 on the power play.
