WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology, 5-1, on Saturday night at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 5-6-6 overall (4-5-3 AHA), while the Tigers improve to 9-7-3 overall (7-4-3 AHA). RIT won the two-game weekend series, 2-0.
RIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 2:08 into the first period, when Brent Alexin scored his second goal of the season. The Tigers then increased their lead to 2-0 at the 5:31 mark when Brennan Sarazin also netted his second goal of the year. For the period, RIT outshot Holy Cross, 16-10, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the power play.
In the second period, RIT made it a 3-0 game at the 8:20 mark when Sean Murphy knocked in a rebound for a power play goal and his fourth goal of the season. At 17:36, the Tigers increased their lead to 4-0 when Brad Patry scored his first goal of the year. With 45 seconds left in the period, freshman forward Joe Brock (Cumming, Ga.) made it a 4-1 game with his fifth goal of the year. Senior defenseman Matt Burke (Milton, Mass.) and freshman forward J.P. Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) assisted on the goal. The Tigers outshot the Crusaders, 15-4, while Holy Cross went 0-1 on the man-advantage and RIT went 1-2.
While on the power play in the third period, Holy Cross went with any empty net but RIT's Simon Lambert was able to score an empty net goal at the 5:27 mark for the 5-1 final score.
Holy Cross sophomore goalie Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) made 34 saves, while Louis Menard stopped 26 shots for RIT. The Tigers outshot the Crusaders by a 39-27 margin, while Holy Cross went 0-5 on the power play and RIT went 1-2.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, January 8, when they travel to West Springfield, Mass., to take on Atlantic Hockey opponent AIC at the Olympia Ice Center at 7:05 p.m.
