Holy Cross Men's Hockey Downs Bentley, 7-4

WATERTOWN, Mass. - Senior captain James Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va.) scored two goals and added two assists, while senior Jon Landry (Lexington, Mass.) scored a goal and had four assists as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Bentley, 7-4, in Atlantic Hockey action at the John A. Ryan Skating Arena on Friday night. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 8-10-2 overall (7-7-2 AHA), while the Falcons fall to 7-10-1 overall (6-7-0 AHA). These two teams will meet again tomorrow night in Watertown at 7:00 p.m.
The Crusaders scored the first goal of the game 8:03 into the first period when junior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) scored a power play goal for his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Sixsmith skated down the left side of the ice with the puck into the Bentley zone and then crossed it to Reinhardt who buried it into the net. Landry was also credited with an assist. For the period, Holy Cross outshot Bentley by a 14-8 margin, while the Crusaders went 1-3 on the power play and the Falcons went 0-3.
Bentley tied the game at 1-1 at 2:20 into the second when Marc Zwicky scored his fourth goal of the season when he lifted the puck into the upper right corner of the net. A little over two minutes later, Dain Prewitt gave Bentley a 2-1 lead with a power play goal. The Falcons increased their lead to 3-1 at the 9:55 mark with a goal by Jeff Gumaer.
The Crusaders would then go onto score five straight goals as Holy Cross made it a 3-2 game when senior Tanner Fogarty (McMurray, Pa.) netted his third goal of the season at 12:36. Junior Matt Werry (Regina, Saskatchewan) stole the puck at the right face-off circle of the Bentley zone and then he left it for Fogarty who knocked it past Bentley goalie Ray Jean. At the 14:00 mark, Holy Cross tied the game at 3-3 when sophomore Kai Magnussen (Okotoks, Alberta) blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net off a pass from freshman Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.). The goal was Magnussen's first of the season.
The Crusaders then took a 4-3 lead with only 43 seconds left in the second period when Reinhardt sent a crossing pass to Sixsmith who then placed the puck into an open left side of the net for the power play goal. Holy Cross outshot Bentley, 14-9.
Junior Brian Kolb (Sandwich, Mass.) increased Holy Cross' lead to 5-3 at the 9:28 mark when junior Cal St. Denis (Freelton, Ontario) sent a pass from behind the net to Kolb who fired it in. Sixsmith then scored the Crusaders' third power play goal of the game and his second goal at 12:21 as Holy Cross had a two-man advantage. The Falcons cut the lead to 6-4 with 1:31 left in the third period when Paul Scalici scored on the power play. Landry then scored an empty net goal in the final minute for the 7-4 final score.
Freshman goaltender Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) made 19 saves to earn the win as he is now 6-6-0 on the season, while Bentley's Ray Jean stopped 29 shots and is now 7-10-1. Nick Moise also made one save for Bentley. The Crusaders outshot the Falcons by a 37-23 margin, while Holy Cross went 3-8 on the power play and Bentley went 2-8.
