WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology, 5-2, on Friday night at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 5-5-6 overall (4-4-3 AHA), while the Tigers improve to 8-7-3 overall (6-4-3 AHA). These two teams will meet again at the Hart Center on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
The first period went scoreless as each team had 10 shots and went 0-1 on the power play.
In the second period, RIT scored three goals in a period of 1:06 to take a 3-0 lead. Simon Lambert scored his ninth goal of the season when he knocked the puck out of the air into goal at the 9:51 mark. Just 14 seconds later, Matt Crowell netted his ninth goal of the year to increase the lead to 2-0. Then at the 10:57 mark, Matt Smith scored his 11th goal of the season to make it a 3-0 game. RIT outshot Holy Cross, 14-7, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the power play.
At 4:57 into the third period, senior forward Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) scored a power play goal to make it a 3-1 game. The goal was his fourth of the season. At 6:29, the Tigers regained their three-goal lead when Brennan Sarazin netted his first goal of the season. The Crusaders made it a 4-2 game at the 13:47 mark when senior Jim Tselikis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored his first collegiate goal. Just 18 seconds later the Tigers extended their lead to 5-2 when Tyler Mazzei scored his second goal of the year.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made 27 saves and is now 3-4-3, while Jared DeMichiel stopped 28 shots for RIT and is 1-1-0. The Tigers outshot the Crusaders by a 32-30 margin, while Holy Cross went 1-4 on the power play and RIT went 0-2.
