WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross freshman forward Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) has been named the Travel Team USA Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week for his three-point performance in the Crusaders' 5-4 win at No. 7 Boston College on Nov. 29. This is Barrett's first career AHA weekly honor.
Barrett tallied two goals and one assist for three points versus the Eagles. He scored the first goal of the game at 12:24 of the first period and then just 55 seconds later he posted an assist on the Crusaders' second goal of the game increasing the lead to 2-0. At 12:09 of the second, Barrett found the back of the net again to give the Crusaders a 4-1 advantage. This was the first time a Crusader freshman had scored two goals and also added an assist since Jay Silvia posted two goals and one assist for three points as the Crusaders defeated RIT by a 5-3 score on March 13, 2009 in the first game of a best two-out-of-three Atlantic Hockey Tournament quarterfinal series. Barrett leads the team with four goals, while he also has two assists for six points.
The win over Boston College was the Crusaders' first victory over the Eagles as a varsity program as Boston College had won the previous eight meetings. BC is the sixth program that has won at least one NCAA national championship that the Crusaders have now defeated. The other five programs that have won at least one national title that Holy Cross has posted a win versus are Boston University, Maine, Minnesota, Rensselaer and Yale. The victory was Holy Cross' fifth win over a nationally ranked team in program history and the third versus a top-10 team. This was the first ever win by an Atlantic Hockey team versus Boston College.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7 when they host a weekend series against Atlantic Hockey opponent Air Force with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
