INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Holy Cross senior defenseman Evan Zych (Kilbride, Ontario) has signed with the CHL's Missouri Mavericks. The Mavericks are the affiliate of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks along with the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings, and the AHL's Chicago Wolves. Zych has not yet made his professional debut, but in the Mar. 26 release by the Mavericks, Zych was placed on the playoff roster. The Missouri Mavericks will face the Rapid City Rush in the opening round of the 2013 Central Hockey League (CHL) playoffs. The series will start on Fri., March 29 in Rapid City and will follow a 2-3-2 format. The fifth-seeded Mavericks will host games three, four and five (if necessary) at Independence Events Center on April 3, 5 and 6.
Zych played in 91 career games at Holy Cross with one goal and 25 assists, leading all current defensemen in assists. As a senior, Zych played in 36 games for the Crusaders, scoring 17 points with 16 assists and one goal. He netted his first career goal against Bentley on Jan. 26 to get the game-winning-goal. During his senior season he spent much of the season ranked nationally in assists and assists per game rising as high as ninth in the nation's defensemen for points per game and 10th overall in assists per game. This past season Zych was featured on the 2013 Hoby Baker Award Fan Ballot.
