Men’s Hockey Tallies 6-3 Win Versus Army
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Karl Beckman (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore Mike McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) each scored two goals, while sophomore goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 25 saves and set the program's all-time record for saves for a season as he now has 885 saves, as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Army, 6-3, at Tate Rink on Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action. Senior captain Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) also posted one goal and two assists for three points. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 18-12-3 overall (14-9-3 AHA), while the Black Knights fall to 7-19-5 overall (7-14-5 AHA). The regular season series is now tied at 1-1-0, as the Black Knights defeated the Crusaders this season by a 7-2 score on Oct. 27. The season series will conclude with the Crusaders' Senior Night game on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass., in the regular season finale. With the win, the Crusaders also earned a first round Atlantic Hockey Tournament bye and home ice advantage in a best two-out-of-three quarterfinals series on March 15-17.
Army took an early 1-0 lead when Andy Starczewski fired a wrist shot to the right side of the net at 9:45 of the first period. At 11:15 and on the power play, Beckman blasted a slap shot past Ryan Leets for his third goal of the season to tie the contest at 1-1. Freshman Joe McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) posted an assist. Just 1:54 later, McNamara drove to the goal and sent a shot to the upper right corner of the net to give the Crusaders a 2-1 advantage. The goal was his seventh of the season. Vos tallied an assist. Jon Bobb tied the game when he knocked in a loose puck from in front of the net at 14:59. Beckman then gave Holy Cross a 3-2 lead with his second goal of the contest when he stole the puck in the Army zone and fired a shot to the upper right corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Holy Cross outshot Army, 11-10, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play and the Black Knights went 0-2.
At 3:15 of the second period, McNamara netted his second goal of the contest and his eighth of the season to make it a 4-2 score. Sophomore Jake Youso (International Falls, Minn.) and Vos each posted an assist. Vos then posted his third point of the game when he tipped in a shot by senior Evan Zych (Kilbride, Ontario) for a power play goal to extend the lead to 5-2 at 11:37. The goal was Vos' seventh of the season. Holy Cross outshot Army, 15-7, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the man-advantage and the Black Knights went 0-1.
Stockton scored his 11th goal of the season when he sent the puck to the lower left side of the net at 4:05 of the third period to increase the lead to 6-2. Senior Brandon Nunn (Fairport, N.Y.) and senior assistant captain Rob Linsmayer (Winnetka, Ill.) each tallied an assist. Linsmayer now has 99 career points. With 1:49 left in the third period, Starczewski scored on the power play for his second goal of the game for the 6-3 final score.
Ginn improves to 17-11-3 on the season. Paul Pijanowski set the previous saves record in 1984-1985 with 872. Leets tallied 31 saves for the Black Knights. Holy Cross outshot Army, 37-28, while the Crusaders went 2-4 on the power play and the Black Knights went 1-4.
