STORRS, Conn. – Four different Crusaders each scored a goal and sophomore goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 21 saves as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Connecticut, 4-1, at the Freitas Ice Forum on Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 15-10-2 overall (11-7-2 AHA), while the Huskies fall to 13-13-3 overall (10-10-2 AHA). These two teams will conclude its three-game regular season series on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass., at 7:00 p.m. Holy Cross is 2-0-0 versus UConn this season as the Crusaders defeated the Huskies, 2-1, on Oct. 26 in Worcester.
Saturday's contest will be "Pink the Rink" as the Crusaders will be wearing a special edition pink jersey to show its support for breast cancer awareness. The jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the game with all proceeds going to Pink Revolution, which is an alliance of dedicated individuals with a unified commitment to those touched by breast cancer. Its mission is to support early detection and prevention strategies, fund clinical research advancements and promote survivorship programs in Central Mass. through its affiliation with the UMass Memorial Comprehensive Breast Center.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 14:37 of the first period when freshman Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) sent a loose puck from behind the net to a waiting junior Adam Schmidt (Warrington, Pa.) who then netted his team-leading 11th goal of the season. At 17:44, the Huskies tied the contest at 1-1 when Jordan Sims tipped in a shot by Brant Harris that ricocheted off the lower right post and over the line. Holy Cross outshot UConn, 9-6.
At 2:49 of the second period, freshman Tim Driscoll (Hingham, Mass.) netted his third goal of the season and his second game-winner when he blasted a one-timer off a pass by freshman Karl Beckman (Okemos, Mich.) to the left side of the net to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. Senior Kyle Fletcher (Kanata, Ontario) made it a 3-1 contest with 1:06 left, when he fired a one-timer off a pass by senior captain Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) for his 10th goal of the season. Beckman also tallied an assist. Holy Cross outshot UConn, 12-9, while the Huskies went 0-1 on the power play.
At 4:22 of the third period, sophomore Jake Youso (International Falls, Minn.) scored his ninth goal of the season to extend the lead to 4-1. Schmidt and Beckman each posted an assist on the goal. The goal was the last of the game for the 4-1 final.
Ginn is now 14-9-2 on the season, while Matt Grogan posted 27 saves and is now 8-3-2. Holy Cross outshot UConn, 31-22, while the Huskies went 0-1 on the power play.
