BUFFALO, N.Y. – Kyle Gibbons scored two goals for the Golden Griffins as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Canisius, 3-0, at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Hockey action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 13-10-2 overall (9-7-2 AHA), while the Golden Griffins improve to 10-12-5 overall (9-7-2 AHA). These two teams will conclude its two-game series on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 2:00 p.m. at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
At 4:07 of the first period, the Golden Griffins took a 1-0 lead when Preston Shupe wrapped the puck around the net to the right side of the goal. Canisius outshot Holy Cross, 17-7, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play and the Golden Griffins went 0-1.
Canisius made it a 2-0 contest with a power play goal by Gibbons at 8:56 of the second period. Gibbons then netted his second goal of the game at 13:25 to increase the lead to 3-0. Holy Cross outshot Canisius by a 10-7 margin, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the man-advantage and the Golden Griffins went 1-2.
The third period went scoreless for the 3-0 final.
Sophomore goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 31 saves and is now 12-9-2 on the season, while Tony Capobianco posted 23 saves and improves to 9-12-4. Canisius outshot Holy Cross, 34-23, while the Crusaders went 0-4 on the power play and the Golden Griffins went 1-4.
