WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Rob Linsmayer (Winnetka, Ill.) and sophomore Mike McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) each scored a goal as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated St. Thomas, 2-1, at the Hart Center on Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game. The Crusaders open the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 16, when they travel to West Springfield, Mass., to play Atlantic Hockey opponent AIC at 7:00 p.m., at the Olympia Ice Center. The Crusaders' home-opener is versus UConn on Oct. 26.
The first period went scoreless as Holy Cross outshot the Tommies by a 10-1 margin. The Crusaders went 0-1 on the power play.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead when Linsmayer found the back of the net on the power play at 5:15 of the second period. After sophomore Jake Youso (International Falls, Minn.) had a shot blocked, Linsmayer then sent the puck to the lower left side of the net from right in front of the goal. Junior Mark Williamson (Centennial, Colo.) also posted an assist on the goal. Holy Cross outshot St. Thomas, 11-10, for the period, while the Crusaders went 1-3 on the man-advantage and the Tommies went 0-2.
At 3:43 of the third period, McNamara blocked a shot and then scored on a breakaway to increase the lead to 2-0. The Tommies made it a 2-1 contest at 5:43, when Marc-Andre Levesque scored a power play goal on a slapshot for the last goal of the game.
Sophomore goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made one save in the first period, while junior Derek Kump (Falmouth, Maine) posted 10 saves as he played the second period and senior Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) tallied four saves as he played in the third. Jonathan Groenheyde posted 27 saves for the Tommies. Holy Cross outshot St. Thomas, 29-16, while the Crusaders went 1-4 on the power play and the Tommies went 1-3.
