Men's Hockey Wins Fourth Straight With 4-2 Victory Versus Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. ­– After a scoreless first period, the Crusaders outscored the Black Knights 4-0 in the second period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Army, 4-2, on Saturday evening at Tate Rink in Atlantic Hockey action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 14-13-3 overall (12-8-3 Atlantic Hockey), while the Black Knights fall to 4-17-7 overall (3-15-5 Atlantic Hockey). The Crusaders have now won four straight games as they have outscored their opponents by a 20-4 margin over the last four contests. Holy Cross sweeps the three-game regular season series between these two teams as the Crusaders defeated Army by a 3-1 score on Dec. 10 and 6-1 on Feb. 10.

The first period went scoreless as each team posted six shots. The Crusaders went 0-1 on the power play and the Black Knight went 0-2.

The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 3:52 of the second period when junior Brandon Nunn (Fairport, N.Y.) netted his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Sophomore Adam Schmidt (Warrington, Pa.) posted an assist. At 9:59, senior Gianni Baldassari (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored his career-best fifth goal of the season to increase the lead to 2-0. Senior Matt Gordon (Perth, Ontario) and freshman Mike McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) tallied assists. Senior Jay Silvia (Burlington, Mass.) then scored a power play goal at 12:34 to make it a 3-0 contest. The goal was his sixth of the season. Senior Kyle Atkins (Brockville, Ontario) and junior Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) posted assists. Just 32 seconds later, senior Andrew Cox (Lombardy, Ontario) tallied his career-best 11th goal of the season. Sophomore Jeffrey Reppucci (Newburyport, Mass.) and Schmidt posted assists. The Crusaders went 1-4 on the man-advantage and the Black Knights went 0-3. Army outshot Holy Cross by a 9-7 margin.     

The Black Knights made it a 4-2 contest with two straight power play goals in the third period. At 5:21, Mike Hull found the back of the net, while at 8:51 Andy Starczewski scored. But the Crusaders were able to keep the Black Knights from scoring again for the 4-2 final.

Freshman Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 28 saves to improve to 11-6-1 on the season, while Rob Tadazak allowed four goals and made 10 saves in 41:09, while Ryan Leets made seven saves in the third period. The Crusaders went 1-8 on the power play and the Black Knights went 2-8. Army outshot Holy Cross, 30-21.

The Crusaders return to action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18, when they play a home-and-home series with Atlantic Hockey opponent Sacred Heart. Friday's game will be at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass., at 7:00 p.m., while Saturday's contest will be at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn., at 4:00 p.m. The Holy Cross men's hockey team will hold its third annual "Pink the Rink" on Friday, Feb. 17. This year, the Crusaders will raise money for breast cancer awareness by selling 'Pink the Rink' T-shirts, holding a chuck-a-puck competition during an intermission and running special hockey prize raffles. Proceeds will go to Pink Revolution which is an alliance of dedicated individuals with a unified commitment to those touched by breast cancer at UMass Memorial and UMass Medical School here in Worcester.
