Men's Hockey Falls To Robert Morris, 4-3, In Overtime

PITTSBURGH, Pa. ­– With the Crusaders trailing 3-1 in the third period junior forward Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) scored two straight goals to send the game to overtime, but Cody Crichton scored the game-winner for the Robert Morris as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Robert Morris, 4-3, on Friday night at Clearview Arena in Atlantic Hockey action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 9-10-1 overall (7-5-1 Atlantic Hockey), while the Colonials improve to 10-8-3 overall (8-3-3 Atlantic Hockey). These two teams will conclude their two-game regular season series on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 7:00 p.m. at Clearview Arena.

Robert Morris took an early 1-0 lead at 7:31 of the first period when Cody Wydo lifted the puck in the net. The Crusaders tied the game at 17:12 when senior defenseman Matt Clune (Toronto, Ontario) scored on the power play for his second goal of the season. After junior forward Rob Linsmayer (Winnetka, Ill.) had a shot saved by RMU goalie Eric Levine, senior defenseman Mike Daly (South Burlington, Vt.) sent the rebound to an open Clune who then scored on a shot from the blue line as Linsmayer screened Levine. The Colonials entered the contest with the best penalty kill in the nation with a .944 percentage as they had only allowed five power play goals all season long before the Crusader goal. The Crusaders went 1-3 on the power play and the Colonials went 0-1. Robert Morris outshot Holy Cross, 16-14. 

RMU took a 3-1 lead in the second period with two straight goals. At 10:49, Josh Jones scored his first goal of the season. Then at 15:25, Wydo found the back of the net for his second goal of the game and his 11th of the season. The Crusaders went 0-1 on the only man-advantage opportunity of the period. Robert Morris outshot Holy Cross by a 7-6 margin.

The Crusaders made it a one-goal contest at 3-2, when Vos tipped in a pass from senior forward Matt Gordon (Perth, Ontario) at 7:55 of the third period for his eighth goal of the season. Senior forward Andrew Cox (Lombardy, Ontario) also assisted on the goal. At 12:45, Zach Hervato went on a breakaway for Robert Morris, but junior goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) made an outstanding save to keep the Crusaders down just one goal. With just 2:04 left in the period, Vos tied the game with a shorthanded goal he when blasted a shot to the right side of the net. Senior forward Luke Miller (Andover, Mass.) and Daly posted assists. The goal was Vos' second of the game, and his team-leading and career-best ninth of the season. The game then went to overtime as Crichton's goal with 4:30 left gave Robert Morris the victory.        

Tysowsky made 25 saves and is now 2-4-0 on the season, while Levine posted 31 saves and is 5-2-1. The Crusaders went 1-5 on the power play and the Colonials went 0-3. Holy Cross outshot Robert Morris, 34-29.
