Men's Hockey Falls To RIT, 6-5
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – With the Tigers leading 6-2 in the third period, the Crusaders scored three straight goals but were unable to find the back of the net for the equalizer as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology, 6-5, on Saturday evening in Atlantic Hockey action at Ritter Arena. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-6-0 overall (3-4-0 Atlantic Hockey), while the Tigers improve to 5-3-2 overall (4-2-2 Atlantic Hockey). RIT sweeps the two-game regular season series as the Tigers won on Friday, Nov. 18, by a 2-0 score.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 42 seconds of the first period when senior Jay Silvia (Burlington, Mass.) netted his third goal of the season. Senior Mike Daly (South Burlington, Vt.) stole the puck at the RIT blue line then sent a crossing pass to Silvia who then buried a shot in the back of the net. At 13:11, the Tigers tied the game at 1-1 when Mark Cornacchia knocked in a loose puck from right in front of the net. The Crusaders went 0-3 on the power play and the Tigers went 0-1. Holy Cross outshot RIT, 16-9.
RIT took a 2-1 lead when Matt Garbowsky knocked in his own rebound for a shorthanded goal at 5:56 of the second period. The Tigers then increased their lead to 3-1 with a goal by Mike Colavecchia at 11:34. At 14:18, the Crusaders cut the deficit to 3-2 when junior Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) scored his fourth goal of the season when he lifted the puck past RIT goalie Shane Madolora from in front of the net. Senior Andrew Cox (Lombardy, Ontario) knocked the puck from the corner from behind the net to Vos. Senior Matt Gordon (Perth, Ontario) also tallied an assist. But 1:08 later, Colavecchia netted his second goal of the contest with a power play goal to make the score 4-2. With the Tigers on a four-on-three power play, Ben Lynch sent a pass through the goalie crease to Mike Hartley who tipped the puck in the net for a 5-2 lead at 18:10. The Tigers went 2-2 on the man-advantage and the Crusaders went 0-1. RIT outshot Holy Cross by a 14-10 margin.
At 3:21 of the third period the Tigers added to their lead with a goal by Adam Mitchell to make it a 6-2 contest. Daly made the score 6-3 at 5:20 of the third period for his first goal of the season as he stole the puck in RIT's zone and then sent a wrist shot past Madolora. Junior Brendan Baker (Edina, Minn.) fired a slap shot from the right face-off circle at 7:29 for a power play goal. The goal was his second of the year. Junior Rob Linsmayer (Winnetka, Ill.) and Silvia notched assists. The Crusaders then scored their third straight goal to cut the RIT lead to just one goal at 6-5 at 10:11 when senior Matthew Davis (Lancaster, N.Y.) blasted a slap shot from the blue line that deflected off a RIT defender and in the net. Freshman Nilan Nagy (Canonsburg, Pa.) and Gordon posted assists. The assist was Nagy's first collegiate point. The Crusaders went with an empty net with 59 seconds left in the period but were forced to put freshman goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) back in the net with 43 seconds remaining because they iced the puck. But with 33 seconds left Holy Cross again pulled Ginn but was unable to tie the game for the 6-5 final score.
Ginn made 21 saves and is now 3-5-0, while Madolora posted 33 saves and improves to 4-0-1. The Crusaders went 1-6 on the power play and the Tigers went 2-4. Holy Cross outshot RIT, 38-27.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Nov. 26, when they take on Brown at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass., at 3:00 p.m.
