AMHERST, Mass. – Conor Allen scored three goals for the Minutemen as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Massachusetts, 7-2, at the Mullins Center on Friday night in non-conference action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-4-0 overall, while the Minutemen improve to 3-4-2 overall. Steven Guzzo also netted two goals for UMass.
UMass took a 1-0 lead at 2:40 of the first period when Michael Pereira found the back of the net. The Minutemen then moved out to a 2-0 advantage with a power play goal by Allen at 8:44. Steven Guzzo then netted a goal at 11:11 to make the score 3-0. Just 53 seconds later, junior Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) cut the deficit to 3-1 with his second goal of the season. Seniors Jay Silvia (Burlington, Mass.) and Mike Daly (South Burlington, Vt.) notched assists.
The Minutemen scored the first three goals of the second period to increase their lead to 6-1. Michael Marcou netted a power play goal at 2:19, Allen found the back of the net at 9:46 and Peter DeAngelo scored at 10:36. Senior Gianni Baldassari (Fort Wayne, Ind.) netted his first goal of the season at 14:24 to make it a 6-2 contest. Senior Matt Clune (Toronto, Ontario) and Daly posted assists. Allen then netted the only goal of the third period for the 7-2 final.
Junior goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) made eight saves in the first period and is now 1-1-0 on the season, while freshman goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) posted 29 saves in the final 40:00. UMass goalie Steve Mastalerz made 22 saves to earn the win and is now 1-0-0. The Crusaders went 0-4 on the power play and the Minutemen went 2-4. UMass outshot Holy Cross, 44-24.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12 when they play a home game versus Atlantic Hockey opponent Sacred Heart in Worcester, Mass., at 7:00 p.m.
